Outbreak review

Posted : 12 years ago on 2 April 2012 12:20 (A review of Outbreak)

I enjoy Outbreak for several reasons but what it mainly boils down to is that the cast is phenomenal and the writing is clever, making Outbreak an excellent thriller about an epidemic dooming on mankind.
Hoffman and Russo are believable as the estranged epidemiologist couple and their romance never gets in the way of what is really important, the main storyline.

The story about a deadly virus breaking loose in the middle of the US is gripping and frightening as it is depicted with utmost realism and most of the performances are solid with a few exceptions. The main issue of the movie is however the last act which for whatever reason includes a helicopter chase scene that ends in a massive explosion. A disappointing ending to an otherwise solid thriller

The film may not be the smartest but it is definitely worth a watch despite some of its irritating elements (Spacey's character for instance).

Drive review

Posted : 12 years ago on 1 April 2012 03:46 (A review of Drive)

Style-over-Substance if done properly is an amazing thing and Refn's Drive is a great example of this. The opening chase/hide'n'seek scene is flawlessly executed and sets the tone to the rest of the movie, aswell as introducing us to the nameless protagonist in an interesting and effective fashion. The rest of the movie plays very much like the opening scene as far as style is concerned and it works extremely well. The picture looks fantastic as you'd expect from the director of the visually astounding Valhalla Rising.

The story is incredibly simple, the way it is told however is highly complex. The Driver's personality remains a mystery from beginning to end but develops a relationship with a woman called Irene (Great performance by Carey Mulligan, sweetening the otherwise rough and explicit escapade of violence and revenge. Refn has a way of portraying violence in a stylish manner without taking away from the shock factor. It's a very mature piece and definitely not something I'd recommend to kids. A lot of people criticize Drive for the excess of violence but I personally think it is necessary to tell the story and for the characterization of the driver.

All in all, I'd highly recommend Drive as it is one of the best films of 2011.

Law Abiding Citizen review

Posted : 12 years ago on 1 April 2012 10:26 (A review of Law Abiding Citizen)

Astoundingly mediocre revenge flick, only this time on a much "grander" scale than usual and I put the grand in quotation marks because of how mediocre this movie is. I cannot help but be baffled by Law Abiding Citizen because to me it is the definition of a 5/10. There is simply not much to say about Law Abiding Citizen other than the premise being original and interesting and one or two ideas being good but most of the movie's running time is filled with mediocre acting, mediocre writing and mediocre direction.

Bad Teacher review

Posted : 12 years ago on 1 April 2012 10:20 (A review of Bad Teacher)

If this is what passes as comedy these days then I really do not want to live on this planet anymore. Dull and unimaginative with a washed-out terrible main actress that is apparently desperate for roles as I have no idea what kind of person would willingly sign a contract for garbage like this.
I had high hopes in Timberlake after his surprisingly convincing protrayal of Sean Parker in The Social Network but thanks to Bad Teacher said hopes have already, just 1 year after TSN, been shattered

Straw Dogs review

Posted : 12 years ago on 1 April 2012 10:14 (A review of Straw Dogs)

Thoroughly disappointing remake of one of my favourite movies ever made despite its good intentions. The films biggest problems are the highly questionable casting choices combined with some terrible changes to the original.
However I found the backdrop (Deep South) they chose for this to be effective and on par with the original.

Cape Fear review

Posted : 12 years ago on 1 April 2012 10:07 (A review of Cape Fear)

In general I avoid seeing remakes of classics, but when the name "Martin Scorsese" is plastered all over the poster even I cannot resist the urge to check it out. I'm glad I did, because Scorsese's version of Cape Fear is extremely well-done. The direction is simply flawless and elevates the outstanding performances by Nolte, De Niro and Lewis.
It does however become glaringly obvious that it is solely based around De Niro's menacing performance and the parts where he is not on-screen are vastly inferior to the rest of the movie and hurt it in the end.

Con Air review

Posted : 12 years ago on 1 April 2012 10:01 (A review of Con Air)

I find it hard to dismiss this movie as trash, because it becomes very obvious throughout the duration of Con Air that they knew exactly what they were doing with this flick. At the end of the day it is entertaining and fun, what more could you ask from a Nic Cage action movie?
I'd recommend this movie for private screenings with friends as it provides excellent entertainment and the possiblities for drinking games are endless
